As some of you may know, my business partner/Mom/Kim suffers from a rare brain disease called Moyamoya. It strikes approximately two people in every million. It often goes undiagnosed because many doctors are not familiar with the symptoms of the disease and don't know how to diagnose it. Although, continuing findings show that it may be more common than originally thought.
In brief, Moyamoya is a closing of the arteries at the base of the brain. As a result of this, small blood vessels grow off of the constrictions in an attempt to continue supplying blood flow to the brain. If left untreated, this can cause small ischemic strokes leading to dementia and eventual death, a massive hemorrhagic stroke leading to death or a slow starvation of the brain from lack of blood flow again eventually leading to death.
Thank God there is a treatment! Kim, my mother, went through two brain surgeries in 2007, where they performed neural bypass surgery to restore blood flow to her brain, saving her life. Today my mother is again the vibrant woman I remember from before her ordeal. For that I am forever grateful to Dr Gary K. Steinberg and his amazing staff at Stanford University Medical Center.
It's unknown what causes Moyamoya, at this time, but there are many theories. Since this disease strikes so few people, research into the cause and treatment of Moyamoya is very underfunded. To help in funding research into this disease, my mother and I are creating a new line of "Moyamoya Awareness" products. 100% of the profit from the sales of these products will be donated to further research into the causes of Moyamoya and its treatment.
